Different Types Of Alimony

Alimony payments can be paid out in different increments in time, both in the short term and long term. The judge will look at the circumstances surrounding each divorce case and decide what the appropriate alimony (spousal support) payment is.

  1. Lump-sum alimony: The person receiving the alimony will receive one lump sum of money or property.
  2. Bridge-the-gap alimony: This alimony is used to help someone transition from married to single life. This can either be paid out in a lump sum or over a short period of time.
  3. Rehabilitative alimony: This alimony is paid over a limited period of time to help someone establish the capacity for self-support, either by redeveloping previous skills, or undergoing training or education necessary to develop supportive skills and gain financial independence.
  4. Durational alimony: This alimony is for a set amount of time, typically paid monthly or semimonthly and is awarded in moderate-term marriages and long-term marriages when permanent alimony is inappropriate.
  5. Permanent alimony: This alimony payment is typically received monthly or semimonthly until the person who receives it gets remarried or dies. It is awarded in long-term marriages.
